Despite being contracted until 2028, the four-time world champion had attracted interest from Mercedes and was believed to be weighing up his options.
Verstappen recently spoke with the media at Hungarian Grand Prix, saying: "I've never really said anything about it because I was just focused on talking to the team about how we can improve our performance, future ideas for next year as well. And that's why I have nothing really to add ever."
He later added: "I think it's time to basically stop all the rumours. And for me, it's always been quite clear that I was staying anyway."
His decision leaves Mercedes’ driver line-up unchanged, with George Russell and rising talent Kimi Antonelli set to continue into 2026.
Russell, who had anticipated Verstappen’s decision, said he felt no urgency to extend his own deal. He has made it clear he wants greater clarity over his standing within the team, describing the current dynamic at Mercedes as “unique”.
While confident in his performances, Russell said he would use the upcoming three-week summer break to reflect on his next steps.

Andy Franks posted this on the news article of one website: "This has always been the smart strategy. By waiting for next year, you can see which team emerges as the best after the reg changes, and then make your move for 2027. It's better to sacrifice a year to ensure that your next decision is well-informed. Every team on the grid would eagerly pursue Verstappen, especially considering the likelihood of one car dominating at the beginning of a major shift in the sport."
Summer posted this on her Facebook, she had similar thoughts to Andy regarding reg changes: "I find this situation quite interesting, though not surprising. Why would Max make changes before the regulations are updated? He can afford to wait and see how things develop since he has a guaranteed drive regardless. This creates intriguing negotiation dynamics for other teams, especially considering that Max could still be available on the market for the 2027 season. Will Mercedes sign a longer deal? Russell might be interested in one, and Hamilton's seat will be open after next year if they don't see value in keeping him."
