Fifa president Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election in March

Infantino, who has held the position since 2016, has faced mounting pressure over his abandoned plan to sell stakes in Fifa competitions to private investment firms.

The lucrative proposal triggered a global outcry, with Uefa threatening to boycott all Fifa competitions, including the World Cup.

Infantino declined to answer questions about his future when approached by reporters at the Women's Under-20 World Cup in Poland on Saturday.

It is the first time Fifa has confirmed that he will seek another term since the plan was announced following the summer's World Cup.

If re-elected, the 56-year-old Swiss will remain in office until 2031.

Fifa this week accused Uefa of conducting a "smear campaign against it and its leadership" as the dispute over Infantino's plan escalated into legal action.

Last week, Uefa filed legal papers in the US seeking the disclosure of evidence and documents from Fifa, while warning that it could also lodge a criminal complaint in Switzerland.
