Australia win by 8 wickets after 2nd day

England slumped to a heavy defeat in the opening Ashes Test as Travis Head’s explosive century powered Australia to a remarkable comeback victory in Perth.

In the first two-day Ashes Test for more than a century, Head tore through England’s attack with a blistering hundred off just 69 balls, the second-fastest in Ashes history. His 123 steered Australia to their target of 205 in only 28.2 overs, sealing an eight-wicket win and giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series.

Key stories and quotes in the build-up

A closer look at an Australian debutant

Brendan Doggett is set to become the 472nd cricketer to represent Australia in Test cricket when he features in the opening Ashes Test at Perth Stadium on Friday. His selection follows a period spent on the fringes of the national side, having been involved in the squad during India’s tour of Australia last year and acting as a reserve for the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June.

Doggett, a right arm fast medium bowler, has built a solid first class record since his debut in 2017. After four Sheffield Shield seasons with Queensland, he moved to South Australia in 2021 where his form has notably improved. He has taken 190 wickets in 50 first class matches, including 110 at an impressive average of 24.5 since his move, compared with 56 at 30.8 during his time with Queensland.

Ben Stokes calls on the England players to make history

Ben Stokes has urged his side to seize a rare opportunity and make their mark by reclaiming the Ashes on Australian soil. Only five England teams have managed to win a series in Australia since the Second World War and just two of those victories have come in the past four decades. England have not claimed a Test win there since the 2010 to 11 tour, the last time they secured the urn away from home.

The 2 to 2 draw in the dramatic 2023 series heightened expectations and England now head into Friday’s opener in Perth with a credible chance of pulling off a rare triumph abroad.
