Sporting stars recognised in New Years Honours
A number of sporting stars from across the UK are being recognised in the New Year Honours list.
One of the most notable announcements has been that former England manager Gareth Southgate has been knighted.
The 54-year-old stepped down from his role in July after guiding England to the final of Euro 2024. It was England’s second consecutive European final under Southgate, though they were defeated by Spain. His eight-year tenure also included taking the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
Southgate becomes the fourth England manager to receive a knighthood, joining Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey, and Sir Bobby Robson.
Former Wales and British & Irish Lions winger Gerald Davies has also been awarded a knighthood. The 79-year-old, who served as president of the Welsh Rugby Union until 2023, has been recognised for his contributions to rugby as well as his voluntary and charitable work in Wales.
Meanwhile, Olympic 800m champion and BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024, Keely Hodgkinson, has been made an MBE. The 22-year-old is honoured alongside several of her Team GB teammates following their success at this summer’s Paris Games. A number of Paralympians have also been recognised in the honours list.

William, an England fan, told us: "For all his faults, he brought England fans closer than ever to the team, stood up for what he believed in and inspired players to share his pride in representing England."
Olivia added: "He was a great manager who brought us so close to glory. People forget how bad England were before he came in. It was considered an achievement to get beyond the last 16 at that stage. To reach two finals was massive for the country."
