World Cup Discussion | Who's going to win the tournament?
We asked some of our readers two simple questions...
Who's going to win the World Cup and why?

France, although there is a caveat. It depends on whether they can avoid any dressing-room tensions. The quality they have in attacking areas means two or three major players will miss out in every game, so it comes down to how they handle that situation.

It's difficult to look beyond France given the attacking talent at their disposal, especially when you consider the impact of extra time in hot conditions against tiring opponents.
Players such as Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue cannot all start, but they can be match-winners when introduced after 70 minutes in 30-degree heat. Olise could also be a key player for them.

For me, the two strongest teams are France and Spain. The question is whether they meet in the final or earlier in the tournament. Naturally, I hope France come out on top.

England and Spain will reach the final, and hopefully England will go on to win it.

France are among the favourites, of course, and Spain are too because they have such a clear identity in the way they play. That is a huge strength.
I still have slight doubts, though, because they rely heavily on Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams in wide areas. If either is unavailable, I am not convinced they have enough individual quality to get over the line.
Alongside Brazil, Argentina, England and Portugal, they are among the leading contenders. Many people see it as a straight choice between France and Spain, but for me it is between Brazil and England, and I am backing England.

How teams cope with the humidity will play a significant role in this tournament, which is why the South American sides could be particularly dangerous.
That said, I think the winner will be a team that is comfortable dominating possession, and that points me towards Spain. Argentina will be there or thereabouts too because of the way they play for Lionel Messi. I still believe he is capable of producing something special.
Stephanie
Hopefully England can do it, but when you look at the other contenders, France have exceptional quality throughout the squad, particularly in attack.

France, Spain and England are the three teams I expect to go deep into the tournament. Spain seem to win everything at every age level, so they have to be considered serious contenders. But as a Frenchman, I am backing France to lift the trophy.
