Women's Super League | Villa celebrate v Arsenal

Arsenal arrived at Villa Park still mathematically in the race, trailing Chelsea by six points with three matches remaining. Their hopes, already faint, were quickly dismantled.

Fresh from the elation of reaching their first Women’s Champions League final in nearly two decades after beating Lyon on Sunday, the Gunners were stunned by a dominant Villa display.

First-half goals from Jordan Nobbs and Kirsty Hanson set the tone before Chastity Grant added a third just after half-time. Rachel Daly then tapped in a fourth to leave Arsenal reeling.

Brief resistance came as Stina Blackstenius and Alessia Russo netted in quick succession to reduce the deficit, but Grant struck again almost immediately to put the result beyond doubt.

For Villa, it marked a third win on the bounce. After a season spent battling at the lower end of the table, they now leapfrog Tottenham into ninth place.

Chelsea then needed only a draw against Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village, a 1-0 victory was enough to clinch a sixth consecutive WSL title.

One game too far for Arsenal

Much like the Arsenal men's team, this is a side that looked to be struggling to compete on multiple fronts. After their legendary victory over Lyon, this was always going to be a difficult game, and so it proved.

However, if they can win the Women's Champions League in a few weeks' time, this defeat will quickly be forgotten and fans will be celebrating one of the greatest achievements in the club's history
