Rugby League | Super Grand Final Preview
Hull KR v Wigan Warriors
The end of the Super League season is here. Two sides will put it all on the line at Old Trafford
Hull KR stand on the brink of history on Saturday night. Victory over reigning champions Wigan Warriors in the 2025 Super League Grand Final would secure the club’s first-ever title and make them only the fifth team to lift the trophy.

Hull KR v St Helens |
It would signal the end of the era of the so-called Big Four.
A win would also see Rovers join an elite group of modern-day treble winners, alongside Bradford Bulls, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan themselves.
However, as last year showed, toppling this Wigan side is no easy feat. Under Matt Peet, the Warriors swept all before them in 2024, becoming the first team in the Super League era to complete a quadruple.
Now, their focus is on a three-peat. Having already lost both the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders’ Shield to Hull KR this season, Wigan will be desperate to avoid surrendering another piece of silverware. Their title remains precious, and they are expected to defend it fiercely.
Only two teams have ever won three successive Grand Finals: Leeds Rhinos between 2007 and 2009, and St Helens from 2019 to 2021, before adding another triumph in 2022.
Wigan hold the unwanted record for the most Super League Grand Final defeats, though that statistic also reflects their remarkable consistency in reaching the competition’s showpiece occasion.
More interesting stats
Should they fall short at Old Trafford on Saturday, it would mark a seventh Grand Final loss, extending that record further.
The final will be the second meeting between these sides at the home of Manchester United Football Club, with Hull KR appearing in consecutive Grand Finals, their only two in history. Wigan, by contrast, will contest a record-equalling 14th, drawing level with fierce rivals St Helens.

Semi-final night at The Brick Community Stadium |
The two clubs have faced each other twice in this year’s Super League, with one win apiece. Their Round 7 encounter produced a thrilling contest, ultimately decided by Wigan’s dynamic duo, Bevan French and Jai Field, who combined for a late match-winning try. Moments later, Abbas Miski shrugged off several defenders to score, sealing a 12–28 victory.
When they met again at The Brick Community Stadium in Round 22, the match was just as tense. With the League Leaders’ Shield on the line, Hull KR battled to a gritty 6–10 win, establishing a six-point lead at the top of the table with five rounds to go.
Having each triumphed on enemy territory, Saturday’s final at Old Trafford promises another dramatic encounter between two evenly matched sides.
Across their past ten meetings, Wigan have edged the rivalry with six wins to Hull KR’s five. In total, Wigan have claimed 30 Super League victories over the Robins – including play-off triumphs in 2009, 2010 and 2023, as well as last year’s Grand Final – while Hull KR have won 13.
