Rugby Union | Wigan, Leicester and Saracens pick up Premiership wins
Wins for Exeter, Leicester and Saracens this weekend
Let’s have a closer at all the drama and action from these fixtures.
Before the weekend's drama, there were away wins for Northampton Saints and Bristol Bears.
Exeter 38 - 0 Harlequins
England centre Henry Slade was instrumental as Exeter maintained their strong return to form with a commanding Premiership victory over Harlequins. The Chiefs struck quickly, scoring three tries in a ten-minute burst during the first half, with Slade heavily involved, setting up Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's opener and then linking with Australian debutant Len Ikitau. Harvey Skinner extended the lead to 24-0 before the break after capitalising on a Harlequins error, while Greg Fisilau added a bonus-point try shortly after half-time.
Exeter's defence proved impenetrable, preventing Harlequins from scoring for the first time in nearly two years, despite the visitors dominating possession and territory. Slade capped the win with a late second try, helping his side move up to fifth in the Premiership table. Harlequins, who last failed to score in a league game in December, remain third from bottom with just one win from four matches.
Leicester Tigers 22 - 18 Bath
Leicester Tigers secured revenge for last year’s Premiership final defeat with a dramatic last-minute victory over rivals Bath at Mattioli Woods Welford Road. The opening quarter was frenetic, with Dan Frost and Olly Cracknell exchanging early tries before Sam Underhill and Cam Redpath extended Bath’s lead, giving the visitors a comfortable advantage.
The Tigers fought back with tries from Tommy Reffell and Nicky Smith either side of half-time as Bath struggled and conceded a series of penalties. With eight minutes remaining, Russell nudged Bath ahead, but Billy Searle’s late penalty in the red minutes secured Leicester’s win after Bath had been reduced to 14 men.
Saracens 65 - 14 Sale Sharks
A brilliant display from 19-year-old Noah Caluori inspired Saracens to a commanding win over Sale Sharks at the StoneX Stadium, moving them up to second in the Premiership. Caluori scored five tries on his first Premiership start as Saracens bounced back from last weekend’s derby defeat to Harlequins, with the hosts crossing the line ten times in total.
Additional tries from Juan Martin Gonzalez, Hugh Tizard, Fergus Burke, Ben Earl and a penalty try, along with 13 points from Owen Farrell, ensured Saracens claimed a third bonus-point victory of the season. Sale’s first-half tries from Bevan Rodd and Rob du Preez proved insufficient, particularly after Luke Cowan-Dickie was sent off early in the second half, following Tom O’Flaherty’s sin-binning shortly before the break.
