Let's have a look at how Harry Kane helped Bayern Munich regain their Bundesliga crown

This was the first major honour of Kane’s career.

Bundesliga | RB Leipzig v Bayern

For all his goals and personal accolades, Harry Kane has long been dogged by one persistent criticism: he had never won a major trophy with club or country.

That narrative shifted this weekend, albeit in somewhat ironic circumstances. Suspended due to a fifth yellow card of the season, Kane watched from the stands as Bayern Munich faced RB Leipzig on Saturday. He was even on the touchline, ready to join the celebrations, until a late equaliser for Leipzig delayed any title confirmation.

Instead, the decisive moment came the following day. Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg ensured Bayern were crowned German champions, clinching the Bundesliga title and finally allowing Kane to lift the first major trophy of his senior career.

It marks a significant milestone for a player whose journey has been defined by goals, consistency and near misses.

Kane was still a teenager when Tottenham last won silverware, lifting the League Cup in 2008. He signed his first professional deal with Spurs in 2010 and spent time on loan at clubs including Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester and Norwich as he honed his craft.

Once established at White Hart Lane, Kane became Spurs’ standout academy graduate of the modern era. He went on to score 280 goals in 435 appearances for the club and rose to second in the all-time Premier League scoring charts, trailing only Alan Shearer.

Yet, despite three Premier League Golden Boots and countless individual honours, success in the form of trophies always seemed just out of reach. He played in a Champions League final defeat to Liverpool, finished runners-up twice in the League Cup, and saw Spurs fall short in successive title races to Leicester and Chelsea.

The story was much the same on the international stage. England reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and were beaten in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. Kane won the Golden Boot in Russia and shared the scoring lead at Euro 2024, but team glory continued to elude him.

How Kane got the success he craved. Eventually.

His £86.4 million move to Bayern Munich in August 2023 was seen by many as a guaranteed route to silverware. The Bavarian giants had won 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles and looked a safe bet for more.

But even then, the path was not straightforward. Kane’s debut came in a 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup, and Bayern were later knocked out of the German Cup by third-tier Saarbrücken. In the Champions League, they were beaten in the semi-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid, while their league campaign faltered, finishing third, their lowest position since 2011.

For Kane, it had begun to feel like a curse. Six previous final defeats, including three with Tottenham, two with England and one with Bayern, fed into the narrative.

Now, finally, that chapter is closed. Kane’s first major title coincides with Bayern’s 34th Bundesliga crown, and while he was not on the pitch for the decisive moment, his influence across the season is unquestionable.

Vincent Kompany’s side have secured domestic glory, and in doing so, helped one of the most prolific forwards of his generation answer the only remaining question about his career.
