Bayern Munich began their Club World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, thrashing Auckland City 10-0 in Cincinnati to set a new record for the biggest win in the tournament’s history.

Vincent Kompany’s side were in complete control from the outset against the part-time New Zealand outfit, with Jamal Musiala netting a second-half hat-trick and Thomas Müller scoring twice as he edges towards the end of his Bayern career.

Kingsley Coman opened the scoring with a sixth-minute header, setting the tone for a relentless first-half display. Sacha Boey volleyed in the second from Coman’s knockdown before Michael Olise, making his Club World Cup debut, arrived at the back post to tap in Müller’s low cross.

Coman struck again moments later with a clinical finish into the bottom corner, and Müller made it five after linking up with Olise once more. Olise then added his second and Bayern’s sixth with a curling effort just before the interval.

Substitute Musiala eventually soon found his rhythm though. The 21-year-old, returning from injury, curled in Bayern’s seventh, converted a penalty for his second, and completed his treble after seizing on a loose pass deep in Auckland’s half.

Müller added the tenth two minutes from time, slotting home Serge Gnabry’s cross to cap a dominant display.

The result surpassed the previous record margin of victory at the Club World Cup, Al-Hilal’s 6-1 win over Al Jazira in 2022.

Germany midfielder Jamal Musiala made a lively return from a hamstring injury, while Thomas Müller added two more goals to his tally in what has become a remarkable final campaign for the club legend. But it was Michael Olise who truly caught the eye.

The 23-year-old Frenchman, formerly of Crystal Palace, scored twice and set up two more before being taken off at half-time. After playing a direct role in 30 goals during his first Bundesliga season, Olise will back himself to maintain that level against sterner opponents as the Club World Cup progresses.
