Football Match Report | Ajax 0 - 3 Galatasaray
Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick as Galatasaray handed Ajax another Champions League defeat
The Nigerian striker extended his European tally to six goals this term
With his treble, Osimhen reached 25 goals in European competition, surpassing former Inter Milan and Newcastle forward Obafemi Martins to become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in Europe.
The 26-year-old leads the Champions League group stage scoring charts this season, one goal ahead of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Ajax had gone into half-time on level terms thanks to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, who produced two outstanding saves to deny Osimhen.
But the Nigerian striker proved unstoppable after the break, racing in front of defender Josip Sutalo to head home Leroy Sane’s cross.
Ajax’s night worsened when the referee awarded Galatasaray two penalties
Osimhen calmly converted the first after a VAR review showed the ball deflecting off Youri Baas onto the Dutchman’s arm. He made no mistake with the second, awarded for a handball by Anton Gaaei, striking into the top-right corner.
The defeat leaves Ajax at the bottom of the group, having lost all four of their Champions League matches by a combined score of 14-1.
Galatasaray moved up to ninth and closed the gap on a top-eight finish, securing a place in the knockout round.
