Federico Dimarco had given Inter the lead in spectacular fashion, bending a stunning free-kick over the Napoli wall and into the top corner, leaving Alex Meret with no chance.

Napoli took control from there, with Romelu Lukaku, facing his former club, and Scotland international Scott McTominay both going close to levelling.

But it was Billing, a January arrival from Bournemouth, who made the difference. Latching onto a pass from Stanislav Lobotka, the Danish midfielder saw his initial effort saved by Josep Martinez but reacted quickest to turn in the rebound and rescue a vital point.

The result means defending champions Inter stay top, holding on to their slender one-point advantage over Napoli. Rudi Garcia’s side had a chance to move to the summit last weekend but slipped up with a shock defeat to 13th-placed Como.

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi could have fresh injury concerns ahead of a crucial week, with Dimarco and Hakan Calhanoglu both forced off early in the second half. The Nerazzurri are already without first-choice keeper Yann Sommer and defender Matteo Darmian as they prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Feyenoord.

A titanic title race in Serie A

This was clearly an important day in the title race. You could see how delighted the Napoli manager was after the match.

It is reported that their manager, Antonio Conte, said after the match: "Inter are a top team, built over time and difficult to beat. Having shown that we can stand up to them and, for long stretches, having even been superior, must give us great confidence."
