After a composed and encouraging first-half performance in Wolfsburg, Caroline Weir gave Scotland a surprise lead five minutes before the break, calmly finishing to silence the home crowd. But any hopes of a famous result quickly unraveled.

Germany, ranked third in the world, emerged from the interval with renewed intent and immediately set about dismantling a fragile Scottish defence, just as they had in Dundee four days earlier in a 4-0 rout.

Selina Cerci levelled with a straightforward header from a corner, the first of her hat-trick, before lashing home her second five minutes later. Scotland never recovered.

Giovanna Hoffmann came off the bench to add two more, her second arriving almost instantly after the restart, and Laura Freigang’s audacious backheel made it five as the hosts ran riot.

Cerci capped off her treble in style with a stunning long-range strike to complete the scoring and leave Scotland bottom of Group A1 without a point.

It was a torrid evening that raised serious questions about the team’s direction. McArdle, in what may have been his final game as interim head coach, watched on helplessly as his side collapsed under pressure.

Scotland now face the daunting task of avoiding relegation to Group B, with Austria (three points ahead )visiting on 30 May. The final group fixture takes place in the Netherlands on 3 June.

Germany and the Dutch lead the group with ten points apiece, the former’s commanding goal difference bolstered significantly by their two emphatic wins over Scotland.
