The result brings a bitter end to City's hopes of silverware this season, capping off a campaign that never quite caught fire.

United, who lifted the trophy for the first time last year, took control in the first half with goals from Celin Bizet and Grace Clinton giving them a deserved 2-0 lead at the interval.

City, hampered by a string of injuries to key players, struggled to muster a response despite the efforts of Brazilian forward Kerolin. Their best opportunity came in the second half when Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced a superb double save, first tipping Yui Hasegawa’s free-kick onto the bar, then reacting quickly to deny Lily Murphy’s follow-up header.

At the other end, United had chances to extend their advantage, with Ella Toone and Bizet both forcing sharp stops from Khiara Keating.

Although City looked more threatening after the break, United’s backline, the stingiest in the Women’s Super League this season, held firm to see the game out.

It marks another impressive milestone for Marc Skinner’s side, who are now just one match away from retaining the FA Cup and continue to push for Champions League qualification.

They will face Chelsea in the final at Wembley on 18 May, a repeat of last year’s showdown which the Blues edged 1-0.
